Cheap (ish) eats in Copenhagen

Now the British peso, sorry, Pound, has fallen around 20% in six months, the question of finding places to eat on a budget has become more acute. Can amybody suggest good value restaurants or districts where eating won%26#39;t break the bank please?

Hi

I don%26#39;t know what kind of food you fancy, and what you consider being cheap.

The first way out of overpriced food is of course to stay away from the most touristy areas, like Nyhavn.

If you like vegetarian food then try this:

www.rizraz.dk

It has a big mediteranean/vegetarian buffet that costs 69DKK for lunch and 79DKK in the evening.

There is two rizraz restaurants in the citycenter you find the adresses on the link, in the left bottom.

On Vesterbro (the area behind the central station) you%26#39;ll find a lot of good and cheap Thai restaurants, with main courses from 80 DKK. Here is a couple of adresses, if you look for these you%26#39;ll for sure find some others too.

Thai Esan 1

Lille Istedgade 7

1700 København V

Ban Gaw Halmtorvet

Halmtorvet 44

1700 København V

Nørrebro (my area) is an area where you will find a lot of turkish, arabic and pakistani citizens. Nørrebrogade, the main street is packed with kebab places, some better than others but it%26#39;s cheap.

Here is some of the other Nørrebro places that popped in to my mind:

Picnic, a turkish place with a lot of nice mezes and cheap main courses from 80DKK

Picnic

Fælledvej 22 B

2200 København N

African, carribean, indian food in a cosy atmosphere:

Kates Joint, main courses from 80DKK

Blågårdsgade 12

2200 København N

There are several others, and if you look a bit around on Vesterbro and Nørrebro, you should be able to find them.

Enjoy!

That%26#39;s a marvellously complete answer, very many thanks. It happens that my hotel is in Halmtorvet, very close to many of the places you mention. I seem to be spoilt for choice.

thanks again.

Having recently visited this wonderful city would highly recommend a visit to the Wok Shop which serves an amazing thai menu. The portions are huge and a true delight to eat! Another good restuarant is RizRaz which serves an all you can eat buffet. Plenty to choose from and tasty too. RizRaz is also is extremely reasonable on the wallet/purse.

Thanks Steve, I%26#39;ve added it to my list.

Hi,

I can also recommend %26quot;La Galette%26quot; - a small, cosy place serving buckwheat pancakes with many different fillings - my favorite is walnuts and goats cheese...

great place and very budget friendly!

La Galette, Larsbjørnsstræde 9 - look for the %26quot;Obelix%26quot; sign.

Almost embarassed to write this, but I love the Mongolian Barbeque resaurant that is located across the street from the south east corner entrance of Tivoli. They have an all you can eat buffet that will cost around 120 kroner...and of course you can choose what you want to have cooked as well. Another really good and easy choice is a restaurant called Det Sundhed Kokken ( The Healthy Kitchen )in Frederiksberg. They have 2 restaurants, 1 located of Gammel Kongevej and another lcoated on HC Orsteds Vej. For 69 kroner, you can receive either a chicken breast or 2 chicken skewers, and you can then choose 3 additional salads to accompany your chicken. The salads range from pasta salads to tzaziki to hummus and a variety of other very tasty and healthy salads. I think that they have approx. 20 to choose from. To save as well, avoid the overpriced and tourist trap cafes...instead order a sandwich at a sandwich shop / deli, and then buy a couple of beers at a kiosk and sit in a square or at the harbor and enjoy the fact that you have the same view, good food, a few drinks for probably 1/4 of what people sitting at the cafes are paying. Have fun.

We%26#39;re just back from Copenhagen and had a fantastic dinner at Cofoco. It only costs 250 krona for a 3 course meal which is cheap by Copenhagen standards. Enjoy!

Just came back from 4 days in Copenhagen. We did try Thai Esan but check out Thai Corner at Istedgade 38 for a more authentic experience.

Pad Thai Noodles and Beef Noodles (not listed on the menu - just ask the waitress - it%26#39;s similar to the ones you get in Thailand) for 200 DKK.

If you%26#39;re looking for sandwiches, try the bakery at the ground floor of the Illum store on Strogert. They have a great selection of rolls and pastries to go as well.
