6 hours layover in the airport

Hi guys,

We are going to have connection flight in Copenhagen which leave us with 6 hours there. What is the best way to get to the city center vs time/money and what suggestion you would have for lets say 4 hours time?

Thank you in advance.

With a limited amount of time you obviously need to get to the city center as quickly as possible. Definitely taxi, and then spend the time walking around. You can easily cover the pedestrian street of Strøget (just over a mile long). If you take a taxi to Kongens Nytorv, you can then walk Strøget in its entire length, to Rådhuspladsen (City Hall Square), a large open square. On the opposite side (from where Strøget exits onto the square) is Tivoli Amusement Park. Normally I would recommend at least a couple of hours there, but if you cover Strøget in an hour and a half or so, you would still have time for a quick Tivoli visit. Keep in mind you will have to go thru security again when you get back to the airport. Depending on the time of day that could take a little while, or it could be very quick.

From the airport there are:

Trains to Central Station every 10 min - travel time 13 min - cost DKK 31.50 one-way per person

Metro to Kongens Nytorv every 5-6 min - travel time 13-14 min - cost DKK 31.50 one-way per person

Tivoli Gardens is just opposite Central Station

From Kongens Nytorv it%26#39;s a short walk to Nyhavn. You could take a canal tour from there (takes about an hour).

Or you could have a stroll up Stroget (the longest pedestrian shopping area in Europe - 1.1 km). The west end of Stroget at Town Hall Square is a short walking distance to Tivoli Gardens and Central Station.

A taxi to Kongens Nytorv can easily take 20-30 min, depending on the time of the day and will minimum cost DKK 150.

We obviously typed our responses at the same time. I agree that the Metro to Kongens Nytorv is the cheapest and in all likelihood quickest way to get there. The only reason I suggested taxi is that it%26#39;s simple and once you get in the taxi, you don%26#39;t need to be concerned about where to get off. With the Metro, a few more steps involved, but if you don%26#39;t mind that, then definitely pick the Metro. I would definitely suggest heading to Kongens Nytorv and walk from there. That way when you get to Rådhuspladsen you will know how much %26quot;extra%26quot; time you have, and at that point decide whether you have time for Tivoli or not. If you go to Rådhuspladsen first, then you would have to double back from the Kongens Nytorv area, and waste some time.

Thank you very much both of you! It was very helpful. We are arriving to Copenhagen at 4:45 and leaving at 10:45. I think even with 2 hours reserved for commute and security we still have 3 to 4 hours to see something. I know that sometimes metro/train is faster then taxi because of the traffic. If you think it is faster, I would definitely go by public transportation.

What do you think about maybe some private tour? Does it worth for this short time or better just walk and enjoy? And what is the course of DKK to USD?

Maybe this is a silly question, but I%26#39;m not sure it those times are a.m. or p.m.? If it%26#39;s a.m., then you%26#39;re going to be in downtown Copenhagen REAL early. And if it%26#39;s p.m., then you could enjoy a couple of hours in the evening at Tivoli. Always a nice experience in the summer.

I%26#39;d like to add that I made my initial recommendation about taxi based on my own experiences. When I arrive at some foreign place after a long flight (and I don%26#39;t know if that%26#39;s the case for you) then I%26#39;m not interested in trying to figure out public transportation. I grab a taxi, so I can just sit back and relax after a long flight, without having to figure out foreign ticket machines, where to get off etc etc. However, having said that, I%26#39;ve used the Metro in Copenhagen a number of times. It is frequent, fast and reliable. And cheaper than taxi.

I would definitely suggest you simply walk around on your own. You%26#39;ll move at your own pace, and everything is walking distance. You%26#39;ll have a few very pleasant hours doing so. Just get a map, find the places you%26#39;re interested in and take it from there. Being on your own also gives you the option of changing your mind which is probably a good thing since you%26#39;re on a tight schedule.

Yesterday%26#39;s rate was USD 100 = DKK 518.26. The rate varies day to day.
