Copenhagen to Hamburg by car

We will be driving from CPN to HAM. What are the differences between ferry or non-ferry route? If we drive without the ferry, what is the route like from a scenic perspecitive and are there any interesting towns or sites along the way?

Thanks in advance,

you save about 150 km going via the ferry but the ferry is quite expensive. No need for reservation though because they sail all the time 24 hours.

About the scenic it is not much different no matter which way you go. The route is very flat and it is on the highway all the way. Don%26#39;t expect any breathtaking views. However driving over the 20 km long %26#39;Storebælt%26#39; bridge is quite an experience....

If you take the long route you could stop in Odense or Flensburg.

I was considering driving up and taking the ferry back. It looked as if you booked in advance you could get a car/4persons on the ferry for about $75. The bridge (i%26#39;m told) runs $35 and gas is $6 a gallon so its almost the same costs.

I%26#39;m I missing something?? Also, what ferry services make the crossing. I could only find one to germany and it traveled 4 times a day.

Thanks again!

Hi Chris

Your prices you have are correct. (75, 6 and 35 $). I would go for the ferry my self.

Are you sure you have been looking at the correct ferry-route? It is Rødby-Puttgarden and the company is %26#39;Scandlines%26#39;

http://www.scandlines.dk/DKFront/Front_COM

They depart every 30 mins and the crossing only takes 45 mins.

You do not save anything booking in advance. Do NOT book the crossing other places than with the ferry-line itself.

Adrian,

Can you estimate the total time to travel from Copenhagen to Hamburg via the Rodby-Puttgarden ferry? How much longer if driving through Denmark?

Thanks

Hi Ken,

I would say about 5 hours either way.

Regarding the route with the ferry crossing there%26#39;s a bit of delay getting to Rødby as it is not on a motorway all the way - also you rarely can just drive right on the ferry it%26#39;s usually about 15 minutes of waiting.

Once in Germany from Puttgarten it isn%26#39;t a motorway right away either and there%26#39;s often a backup on that part of the route.

I would choose the bridge-route personally.

Hi, I want to drive the opposite direction. Hamburg to Copenhagen. Would I need to drive over a bridge and use a ferry? How long will it take to get to the bridge or ferry from Hamburg?

|||

You have 2 alternatives.

The most direct is via Puttgarden and the ferry to Rodby. Depending on where you start in Hamburg the distance to Puttgarden is about 150 km, so (depending on your preferred speed on the Autobahn) it could take 1:30-1:45 to get to the ferry.

Alternatively you can drive up through Schleswig, Jutland and Funen and cross the Great Belt (toll bridge) to Copenhagen. Motorways from you get out of Hamburg and all the way to Copenhagen. Speed limit on Danish motorways is 110/130 km/h. To reach the bridge over the Great Belt you will need about 3:30.

What is the cost difference from taking the ferry from Hamburg to Copenhagen vs. taking the Gold Belt bridge toll?

|||

The cost difference depends on the fuel efficiency of your car.

The route crossing the bridge is about 140 km longer, but the ferry crossing is more than twice as expensive as the bridge toll.

The toll is 215 dkr whereas the ferry costs 480 dkr.

So it all comes down to how much gas in your car for an extra 140 kilometers costs.
