Denmark by Car or Train

Two of us are planning a 7-day trip to Denmark. We would like to visit Helsinger, Funen, and Ribe for three days. Four days in Copenhagen.

Is it better to rent a car for the three days or take trains?

Thank you

I think you can do both when it comes to Helsingør and Ribe, as it is no problem arriving by train and exploring both cities by walking around and maybe taking the occasional bus.

When it comes to Funen (Fyn) I would definitely go for a car as it is an island and not a city like Helsingør and Ribe. So to get more freedom in what you want to see and do on Funen I would rent a car.

You should however be aware that Ribe is on the west side of Jutland, Funen is right in the middle and Copenhagen is on the east side of Denmark on a different Island (called Sjælland). This means that there will be a good deal of driving involved.

Hi,

Have you thought about where you want to visit on Funen? I assume HC Andersen%26#39;s house in Odense. The south of Funen (Assens and Faaborg) are the most beautiful places.

There are only 2 railway lines on Funen. One from east to west through the middle of the island, and one from Odense to Svendborg in the south east of the island. There is an excellent network of buses all over Funen.

Ribe is the oldest town in Denmark and most things within walking distance.

I would not include Helsingor in your trip to Funen and Ribe as Helsingor is in the opposite direction. Helsingor is easily reached by train from Copenhagen (45 min).

Your trip to Funen and Ribe will of course be more flexible if you rent a car, but if you are going from Copenhagen you have to cross a toll bridge (DKK 215 each way) on the way. Driving in Copenhagen can be a nightmare if you do not have local knowledge due to the many one-way streets.

I would definitely spend 3 days on Funen and Ribe alone, and do Helsingor as a day trip/half day trip from Copenhagen.

Hans,

Thank you so much. This helped us make our decision. Lookingforward to visiting Copenhagen.
