Luggage storage at the main CPH train station - Kobenhavn H

Is there still luggage lockers available at Kobenhavn H main train station?

|||

Yes there are both lockers and a serviced area - at the same place.

Once you come up into the hall from whatever track you arrive on turn left and walk to the end.

Stairs lead down to a street named Rewentlovsgade - the luggage area is down the stairs and to your left again - clearly marked by luggage signs.

|||

do the service area keep luggage for a longer period of time? for like a week or 2? what are the charges like?

|||

I%26#39;m not sure they do at the train station, but at the airport they will keep your luggage for up to 30 days.

The cost at the airport is 40 dkr pr. bag pr. day.

Restaurant Huks Fluks, Grabrodretorv 6-8, 1054 Copenhagen K.

This restaurant is best avoided. I had dinner which was suppused to be a Danish famous fish %26quot;rodspaette%26quot;. The meal was the worst food I ever had. The flat fish was only fried on one side and the other side raw. The potatoes were very old and like chewing gum. Besides this it was dripping on the table from a pipe under the ceiling ! The people working in this place told me they were afraid to complain to the boss !! Never again.

|||

Sorry to say, but most of the restaurants in that area (Gråbrødre Torv) are tourist traps and to be avoided.

List of recommended restaurants

Restaurant tips are, understandably, the topic of a large number of posts. Instead of everybody repeating themselves in different threads, resulting in the many good recommendations being spread all over the forum and thus forgotten 20 or 30 pages down the line, I thought I would make a lis of recommended restaurants for future reference and use.

This is not my list. I hope everybody - locals and visitors alike - will contribute to this list by adding new tips. Otherwise, it will just be my own personal eating-thread, and that is not nearly as interesting.

To avoid this list being used for discussion more than for tips on places to eat, please keep comments and questions short and exact.

Every entry made on the list is good. If someone has eaten there and enjoyed it, there is no need to let everybody know that you disagree. Taste differs, so please let people know why it suited your taste.

Please supply all restaurants listed with the following info, so that everyone can immediately see where it is, what the prices are like, what type of food is made there etc.:

A few of my own favorites:

Madklubben (LR ** BIS)

Store Kongensgade 66, City

33 32 32 34 (Reservations a must)

Where else in the city can you get a solid and tasteful 3-course dinner for 200 Kroner? And decent wine at 100 to 200 Kroner a bottle to go along? The answer may be nowhere.

Spicy Kitchen (* IND)

Torvegade 56, Christianshavn

Cheap, small and unpretentious restaurant serving up solid Indian dishes. One of the specialties is the chicken soup, a steal at 30 Kroner.

Tribeca NV (LR ** BIS)

Bygmestervej 2, Nordvest

The owners behind this place would like to compare the working class neighborhood of Nordvest (Northwest) with New Yorks Tribeca. While that may be stretching it a bit, there is a hint of De Niro to the food and the atmosphere is relaxed and cool.

Lê Lê Nhà Hàng (L ** VIE)

Vesterbrogade 40, Vesterbro

Large, very lively restaurant with open kitchen and high ceilings serving tasty vietnamese courses from a large menu. Reservations not possible. Check in at the bar and wait for next available table. Crowded on fridays and saturdays, but worth the 20-40 minute wait.

A Fair (R ** MIX)

Kjeld Langes Gade 2, City

A 3-course menu at 149 DKK usually sounds like bad kebab, bulgur or overcooked vegetables, but A Fair manages to make tasty courses at prices that everybody can understand. Also serves a solid brunch.

Rex Republic (R *** STE)

Blegdamsvej 106, Østerbro

Meat, meat and meat. Every vegetarians nightmare, Rex Rep. is a basement restaurant with dimmed light and heavy wooden tables serving large and tender steaks and thick Rhone wine to go along.

|||

Traditional Danish lunch restaurants

(serving Smørrebrød: Rye bread topped with fish, meat, vegetables etc. Some of the classics include %26#39;Frikadeller%26#39; (meatballs), %26#39;Sild%26#39; (herring), %26#39;Leverpostej%26#39; (Danish-styler pate), %26#39;Tatar%26#39; (raw, minced meet), %26#39;Fiskefrikadeller%26#39; (Fish meatballs).)

Beer and Snaps recommended with all dishes.

Told og Snaps (L * DEN)

Toldbodgade 2, City (By Nyhavn)

Traditional basement restaurant. Walls covered with old photos of the royal family. Quality homemade dishes in a small room that gets quite noisy most days.

Kanalcaféen (VRO * DEN)

Frederiksholms Kanal 18, City

A classic smørrebrød restaurant set on a beautiful canal with old sailingships. Outside seating in summertime. Everything in this place tastes good and the portions are large. 2 dishes usually enough.

Ida Davidsen (LR ** DEN)

Store Kongensgade 70, City

Perhaps the most famous smørrebrød restaurant in CPH. this place has been around for ages. Food is amazing, but the prices are steep.

Palæ Bar (* DEN)

Ny Adelgade 5, City

The unpretentious choice. More a bar than a restaurant, but serves smaller pieces of smørrebrød at 15 DKK a piece at lunch time. You need 4-5 pieces. Very informal: Go get your own pieces in the kitchen. A favourite among older actors and journalists.

|||

Great post. Will be in Copenhagen for 5 days in late November and I shall report back afterwards.

Could we add %26quot;F%26quot; to the setting/atmosphere listing to represent family friendly?

|||

I will recommend this restaurant: Riz Raz. They have tasty food. It is a vegetarian restaurant.

Price range:

Cheap (buffet is below 100 DKK / 13 EUR).

The restaurant is Romantic.

Origin: The food from the Mediterranean.

Location: Lies about 300 metres from the town hall (in Danish: Rådhuset).

Website: http://www.aok.dk/profile/371

Regards Naturelsker

|||

I%26#39;ll leave my two cents :)

Pachá (http://www.pacha.dk/) LR***SPA

By far my favorite spot in the city. Great location in the heart of the town, close to the City Hall and the main pedestrians street. If I want great, tasty food, this is the place to be: with my husband, with my friends, with 16 colleagues from work... It%26#39;s always a great experience. The service is perfect, the food is just unbelievable, great drinks, great atmosphere.

It%26#39;s a small place, so reservation might be important.

Sushitarian (http://www.sushitarian.dk/) LR***JAP

Great sushi, very lively atmosphere, very well located close to Kongens Nytorv. Highly recommended!

p.s. I rated the price range according to what I usually spend, although they do have cheaper options. I usually spend 200-300DKK in these places (ammount per person).

|||

Den Anden ** L BIS

Fortunstræde 7

CPH K

33 14 64 00 (Reservations a must)

Newly opened restaurant run by the same guys who run Madklubben. French bistro style food. Fairly simple, but quality food at very reasonable prices.

Saigon Quan * VIE

Godthåbsvej 48

Frederiksberg

38 10 19 00 (Reservations recommended)

Perhaps the best Vietnamese restaurant in Copenhagen. They never miss. Great food every time. And Vietnamese is a nice break from the Asian foods, lighter, greener, more fresh.

Casablanca ** (Maroccan)

Turesensgade 21 (in the basement)

CPH K

Recently opened Maroccan place. Cous-cous, chicken, olives etc. Very wholesome and filling food at prices that won%26#39;t make you cry.

|||

Thank you so much Don Tomas, that is exactly what I needed. I so much appreciate your time.

|||

Youre welcome. Please add your own discoveries to the thread when you return, so we can get a nice selection going. Happy eating.

|||

Would anyone be able to recommend a restaurant for lunch on Christmas day, great atmosphere, suitable for adults and children, moderately priced? I realise most places are closed on the 25th but would appreciate any help you can give. Many thanks.

|||

Sorry to piggy-back on the previous post, but would anyone also recommend a restaurant for New Years Eve? Thanks in advance.

Currency

Unfortunately (?) had already booked the DFDS weekend mini-cruise before consulting tripadvisor. Was aware that Denmark had not joined the Euro but have read that some shops (when open!) and restaurants will accept Euros. Is it best to stick to DKK as at this stage we obviously don%26#39;t know where we will be having lunch in Esbjerg? Party of 6 of us going August Bank Holiday weekend so would very much appreciate early reply!

|||

Hi Mags,

Some shops and restaurants may accept EUR, but at an - for you - unfavourable exchange rate.

Earlier this summer a newspaper did a survey on the exchange rate in shops and restaurants on the Danish west coast.

On the day of the survey the official exchange rate was 7.44. The exchange rate in shops and restaurants varied from 7.00 to 7.30 and in most supermarkets the rate was 7.20.

Hi Hans

Thank you so much for your prompt reply and advice - we have decided to take DKK to spend in Esbjerg.

Kind regards

Phone cards?

Though I%26#39;d prefer renting a cell phone during my short stay in Copenhagen, I don%26#39;t seem to be able to locate a supplier to rent a phone. Therefore, I may need to use public phones. Do public phones still accept coins, or are phone cards needed? Last time I was in Copenhagen, I needed to make a call, and at this particular train station, the phone did not accept coins, so I had to purchase a phone card to make just one call. Is there a better way? To be honest, I%26#39;ve not used a phone card in a long time, is there a recommended card that I should purchase for use while in CPH? I don%26#39;t expect to make many calls, probably just two, maybe 5 at the most. Thanks

|||

This is what the official tourist informations has to say on the subject:

visitdenmark.com/usa/…telephones.htm

About rental this is the only information I can find and I know nothing about the business:

altelphonerental.com/coverage/…denmark.html

I assume you are sure your cell phone wouldn%26#39;t work in Denmark with a prepaid sim card bought here.

1/2 a Day in Copenhagen

We are leaving on a cruise from Copenhagen the middle of September and will have the better part of the morning and part of the afternoon to walk around the area. We are staying in the Nyhavn area. Can anyone tell me how much money I should convert (canadian to kroners)to pay for one breakfast and one lunch while there. Should I convert before I leave home or do it at the airport. We arrive at the airport around 10pm on our arrival day. Also at that time of night is it better to just take a taxi, there will be three of us with 3 bags and handcarry stuff.

Type of Currency

What is the accepted types of currency for use in Copenhagen? Is the Euro accepted? What currency is accepted if we travel over to Sweden?

|||

Hi,

The currency in Denmark is Danish Kroner (DKK).

US Dollars and Euros are accepted in some places, but at a - for you - very unfavourable exchange rate.

The currency in Sweden is Swedish Kroner (SEK).

US Dollars and Euros and even Danish Kroner are accepted in some places, but again at a - for you - very unfavourable exchange rate.

Hans

|||

Can the DKK be easily obtained at a cash machine at the airport or should I get some DKK in the USA before I leave.

|||

There both ATMs and bank counters at the airport.

Hans

|||

We just got back from Denmark and Sweden. Most places accepted our US Mastercard. In Sweden we were even able to user our Danish paper money. It was much easier than I thought it would be.

|||

I just came back from Denmark, but we also found that they didn%26#39;t give changes in Denmark. For example, if you give them 50DKK, and the stuff is 45, the store would NOT give you the change back. At first I didn%26#39;t realise that because I didn%26#39;t count the money, but my friend found that it was true in every store. Does anybody know why? I mean even if it was a penny stores would give it back to you in the UK or US.

|||

Superkathy - I think - or hope - what you are talking about is not getting 0.25 kr. back.

If a cucumber costs 9.75 dkr. and you hand over 10 dkr, then you would expect to get 0.25 kr. back, but you don%26#39;t.

The reason is that particular coin was discontined a while back but the prices have yet to be adjusted.

The rule is up or down to the neares 0.50 - smallest coin.

If you pay with a credit card it will however cost 9.75 and stores are not allowed to charge 10 instead.

If something costs 45 dkr and you hand over 50 dkr. of course you%26#39;ll get 5 dkr. - big round coin with a hole in the middle back.

|||

%26gt;%26gt; if you give them 50DKK, and the stuff is 45, the store would NOT give you the change back

If that is the case, you have been cheated. I have never experienced that.

Since the 25 ore was abolished 1 October 2008 the smallest coin denomination is 50 ore, so prices (only the total) is rounded off to nearest 50 ore.

E.g. the price is

44.00-44.24 you pay 44.00

44.25-44.74 you pay 44.50

44.75-44.99 you pay 45.00

That%26#39;s the rule when you pay cash. If you pay by card, the exact amount is charged. Cash registers in shops do the rounding off automatically.

Hans

|||

Warning: if you pay be card you may be charged an extra fee, in some shops, restaurants and hotels. We paid a surcharge at a restaurant in Tivoli and at various other points in our recent stay in Denmark.

If I%26#39;d been aware ofthat I%26#39;d prbably have taken a bit more cash with me. However if you use an ATM for cash you also get charged so it%26#39;s prob. about the same really.

|||

Lynda

what type of fee does the ATM charge?

Nice name LOL

Ferries & Trains

My wife and I are planning a trip to visit Oslo, Copenhagen and Stockholm. We want to experience both the ferry and train to experience what each has to offer. If we flew into Oslo, should we take a train to Copenhagen and the ferry to Stockholm, or ferry then train? Or train to Stockholm and ferry to Copenhagen? We can start anywhere and leave from anywhere.

|||

There IS an overnight ferry between Oslo and Copenhagen, but no ferry Copenhagen-Stockholm, so train Copenhagen-Stockholm (especially the X2000 train) would make sense. 5 hours - very comfortable and enjoyable ride.

Hop-on/Hop-off Transportation

Is there a form of Hop-on/Hop-off transportation in Tallinn?

Cell Phone Rental while in CPH?

Is it possible to rent a cell phone during my stay in Copenhagen? If so, where? Is there a location at CPH airort where I can rent cell phones? Is there a website where I can find information on cost or to reserve? Thank you.

|||

Well, the cheapest Nokia phones can be bought for 300-400 DKK. I don%26#39;t think renting it fro a few days will be any cheaper. Then you%26#39;ll just get a pre-paid SIM card for your phone and voilà.

(Tri band phones are a little more expensive, but then you would be able to use it back home as well.)

Oslo, Copenhagen & Stockholm

My wife and I are planning a trip to visit Oslo, Copenhagen and Stockholm. We want to experience both the ferry and train to experience what each has to offer. If we flew into Oslo, should we take a train to Copenhagen and the ferry to Stockholm, or ferry then train? Or train to Stockholm and ferry to Copenhagen? We can start anywhere and leave from anywhere.

|||

There isn%26#39;t any ferry between Copenhagen and Stockholm -- only between Oslo and Copenhagen. Consider open-jaw (aka %26quot;multi-city%26quot;) flight arriving to OSL and returning from ARN. Book a cabin on the the overnight ferry Oslo to Cph., then book train for Cph.-Sto., then fly home from ARN to save backtrack time and expense.

If you can arrange your itinerary to include Bergen and the surrounding fjords, you should. Consider flight arriving first to BGO, then train to Osl. (a very scenic and worthwhile train trip, IMHO), then pick up the rest of the itinerary from there.

Copenhagen City Bus tour from cruise terminal.

How to gain access to Copenhagen City Bus Tour from cruise terminal.

|||

Do you mean Hop On Hop Off Bus?

How you gain access to the bus depends on where your cruise ship is docking (Langelinie, Copenhagen Freeport or Nordre Toldbod).

Hans

|||

Thank you, Hans.

Yes, the Hop On Hop Off Bus sounds right, but, unfortunately, I do not as yet have the docking arrangements.

CMDub.

|||

Which date and name for your cruise ship?

Hans

|||

Celebrity Constellation, Monday 10th August.

|||

Celebrity Constellation will dock at Langelinie Pier. The hop-on hop-off bus passes Langelinie Pier or you can take bus 26 to the city centre.

Hans

|||

Very helpful, Hans. Many thanks.

|||

What location does the Holland America Line dock?

|||

A quick look through the cruise list I only noticed:

Prinsendam 08/19 - Langelinie Pier

Rotterdam 09/04 - Copenhagen Freeport

If you are on another cruise ship, please state the name of the ship.

train or plane from Copenhagen to Gouda or Utrecht, Holland

I am spending a few days with my 10 year old son in Vedbæk, a few minutes away from Copenhagen. We are enjoying our stay with relatives, and today we visited a couple of museums, in addtion to two other ones we visited. Didn%26#39;t have the opportunity to visit the vikings museum in Roskilde yet, neither Kronborg.

My plan is to take either a plane or train to Gouda or Utrecht tomorrow to visit another relative and also do some sightseeing, stay there until Sept. 2nd and go back to Berlin for an overnight stay at a hotel and next day, Sept. 3rd take the flight back to the USA. I know the overnight train from Copenhagen to Utrecht takes 15 hours, but it is something my son is looking forward, or should I travel by plane?

Thanks

Copenhagen to Gouda by train with 10 year old son

Hi,

I am currently in Copenhagen with my son visiting relatives, and we want to go to Gouda, where we have another relative. My son would love to travel during the night just to experience a couchette train. Will it be too expensive, what are my other options?

Thanks

|||

Every night at 6.53 p.m a night train leaves Copenhagen headed down through Europe.

It will bring you to Utrecht at 9.34 the next morning. From Utrecht it%26#39;s a 20 minute ride.

You could get to Gouda a little sooner but that would mean changing trains three times - the first at 4.30 in the morning.

Since you are in Denmark now I suggest your relatives call DSB - the Danish train company for a price.

You%26#39;ll have choices from spending the night with four other people in very basic bunk beds without any bedding or getting a compartment for just the two of you with more comfortable beds - the latter will be the most expensive of course.

Don%26#39;t expect it to be cheap but a great experience for your son ;)

|||

Andreadoria56,

Thanks for the information. Since I am still in Denmark, could you please give me advice on what sites are recommended for children? My relative took us to a castle located in Helsinborg, Sweden, and also to Fredericksborg. The first one was more interesting to my son, who is interested in history battles.

Thanks.

|||

He might like the Resistance Museum: www.natmus.dk/sw23424.asp

|||

My suggestions would be:

The arsenal museum:

http://www.thm.dk/info/eng.htm

Or if you have time get on the train to Roskilde and visit the Viking Ship Museum:

vikingeskibsmuseet.dk/index.php?id=1246%26L=1

|||

Thank you all for your advice. I went with my son to the Arsenal Museum and he loved it! He wants to see the Kronbørg Castle (kind of redundant), and also I would like him to visit the Viking Museum in Roskilde, but maybe spending one more day in Denmark will make it difficult for our trip to Gouda in the Netherlands.

Are there any flights to Utrecht or Gouda from Copenhagen? Maybe we could visit the castle or the museum and take an afternoon flight.

Thanks.

Gothemburg or Gouda?

Hi again,

I am still in Copenhagen but have to make a decision where to go next with my 10 year old son. We are flying back to the USA on Sept. 3rd from Berlin.

The train to Utrecht, Netherlands is an overnight one and takes 15 hours, which I don%26#39;t mind because they have couchettes. The plan is to stay until Sept. 2nd when we take our train to Berlin. On the other hand, if we travel to Gothemburg today then we have to take the train overnight Malmo-Berlin on Sept. 1st so that we arrive with enough time to Berlin. On both cases we have to be in Berlin by Sept 2nd. Which will be the best option time wise?

Thanks.

Transportation from Freeport to main Copenhagen train statio

What is the least expensive way to get from the Emerald Princess to the main train station in Copenhagen?

Also, from the Airport Hilton to Freeport.

Thanks!

|||

Public transport will always be the least expensive way.

Once the Emerald Princess docks you will have to walk a good bit to get to the Nordhavn S-train station.

From there it%26#39;s four stops to the central station and the trip costs 21 dkr.

From the airport to the Freeport ride the Metro to Nørreport station and then change to the S-trains going north.

Then walk from Nordhavn station. This trip costs 31,50 dkr.

Plan your trips at this website:

www.rejseplanen.dk - at the very bottom you can change the language to English by clicking the tiny English flag.

You can copy/past this as the address for the ship:

Sundkaj 7, 2100 København Ø, København

The website will then give you a map to print out for the walk.

|||

Thanks! Your help is greatly appreciated. I will follow your links to get better directions.

Thanks again!

|||

Just another quick question. Is this the address were the Emerald Princess leaves in Copenhagen?

Sundkaj 7, 2100 København Ø, København

Yes

Weather in September

Hi. Can anyone give me an idea of what the weather is like in Copenhagen in early September. I%26#39;m just trying to decide what kind of clothes to take. Many Thanks!

|||

You never know in Denmark what kind of weather is waiting for you tomorrow. But pack the clothes that we call %26quot;layer on layer%26quot;. Tees, sweater, light jacket, scarf and footwear suitable for rain, just in case.

Remember it is rather windy here.

xmas in esbjerb

could any one tell me when xmas decorations are put up in esbjerg as we are thinking of a mini cruise in late november /early december.

|||

Hi,

Xmas decorations are usually lit on the last Sunday in November.

Hans

|||

thanks for the reply .will probably go in first week in december

would u pick a hotel near...

In picking a hotel would you choose one near Tivoli Gardens (rr station) Or on the waterfront.

Are most hotels Non Air conditioned?

Do any permit smoking?

thanks

|||

I%26#39;d choose waterfront, it%26#39;s just 10 mins walk from the Tivoli. I like the canal view from Marriott.

%26quot;Are most hotels Non Air conditioned?%26quot; No idea, but it%26#39;s only needed (if at all) from June to August, not a major problem.

%26quot;Do any permit smoking?%26quot; Most places seem to be non-smoking, due to legislation I guess.

|||

The waterfront is quite nice, but a bit deserted. Polarbearfin are right, though, it takes about 10 minutes to walk to central CPH.

When will you be here? Air con is not very common here in Copenhagen, or Denmark, as we really do not need it - talking about 8 days per year when you would really wish you had one. We just open a window... or turn up the heat.

About smoking - if this is important for you, you should ask the hotel. Most hotels are non-smoking, but I think it is up to the hotel to decide. All cafes and restaurants are non-smoking (but you are still allowed to smoke in some small pubs and bars).

|||

Air Conditioned? Haha, consider yourself lucky if the radiators are working.

We are lucky if there is one single day a year where the temperature is high enough to turn the aircondition on. Nobody has it, nobody needs one.

77 F is the hottest you will ever experience here in summer time (if you are that lucky!).

I hope you will have splendid time and I recommend hotels near Tivoli. You will be pretty close to everything.

|||

So Far I have 2 votes for waterfront and one for Tivoli area. I have plenty of time to continue looking since my cruise fr CPH isnt til next yr.

I will post hotels when I narrow it down

thanks ladies

Fun in late October.

I visited Copenhagen last year in August and had such a good time I%26#39;ll be coming back again in late October -- but I have some questions.

What time does the sun usually set? I read somewhere that it sets ~6 pm, is this accurate?

What will the weather be like. I realize it will be cold, but is it really cold?

Also, will there be less crowds than I encountered last year in August?

|||

I think 6 pm is quite right...

October is one of my favorite months here in Copenhagen. The weather can be anything from bitterly cold and windy, rain and sun, so bring clothes that you can put on in layers - and something to keep you dry if it rains.

If you are lucky you will have some beautiful late fall days with high sun and blue skies. But the truth about weather in denmark is that it is totally unpredictable.

I think you will see less crowds than in August. But the tourist season have been quite disappointing this year compared to other years.

Have fun and don%26#39;t hesitate to ask again.

|||

I agree pretty much with Katrine, though I would like to add that what%26#39;s really nasty here it is wind. If the wind%26#39;s not blowing, the temperature doesn%26#39;t really get that low in October.

That is why you should remember your scarf and your jacket :)

Hop-on/Hop-off Transportation

Is there a form of Hop-on/Hop-off transportation in Helsinki?

I think it would be more appropriate to post this question in a Helsinki forum :-)) Cheers.

Please advice any agency/landlord willing to rent a flat for two. how much will it cost per mth/week ? Any advice abt temperature at that time %26amp; other safety advice for ladies?

thanks

pandanleaf

|||

Hi,

I would assume that the University could help you with accomodation? See http://studies.ku.dk/housing/

From January till June you%26#39;ll see almost 3 different seasons - winter, spring and very early summer. You could have snow, rain, sunny days, grey days, dark days and damp days, low temperatures and high... The only advice I can give you for sure is to bring clothes (or buy them here) that will keep you warm and dry - and some for the odd warm day later in spring - the weather in April and May can be lovely - or the opposite. I guess I am trying to say that the Danish weather is totally unpredictable.

Copenhagen is a fairly safe city, also for women as long as you take care. Act as you would in any other city (avoid walking in deserted streets alone, avoid eye contact with people that seems as if they are up to no good etc... you get the idea).

Anyway, I hope you%26#39;ll have fun here and enjoy your stay - and I hope this answered your questions!

|||

I know the university has problems in providing accommodation to all exchange students. In that case I may suggest to come to Copenhagen a little bit before your studies begin, and look for a small apartment or a large room for 2. There are rental room announcements posted also in the different campus buildings. I also recommend contacting some of the earlier exchange students from your own country that may come up with plenty of good ideas. Student networks help finding a place a lot.

B&B in Rinkobing and Thisted

We are heading to the land of my ancestors! Any B%26amp;B%26#39;s in these areas? I know they are fairly small, but would like to stay in a smaller place. We will be leaving from Copenhagen, do we take the train or will we have to bus it? We do have a EuroRail pass, but might save it for longer trips. Any ideas?

|||

Planning a trip within Denmark easy with www.rejseplanen.dk that functions in English as well. It will show you all available travel possibilities and combinations of bus %26amp; train etc. Regarding to a B%26amp;B in that area. An internet search for tourism information offices in those areas would give at least the contact information for tourist information ofices. They certainly have a list of B%26amp;B (most of them are part of private residences in Denmark). Hope it helps.

Thanks so much! A great web site and I can almost understand it! Looking forward to some great Danish food.

Adapter for hair dryer/curling iron for Copenhagen

What kind of adapter/converter do I need to use my hair dryer and curling iron in Copenhagen. I have a Hi-Low converter, do I also need an adapter here also.

My appliances are non-ceramic.

|||

A high/low converter is a must since we have 220 V installations but you also need to have an adapter for the plug as the sockets differ here. CEE 7/16 and CEE 7/17 are the sockets found here.

|||

Are the sockets the round recessed ones. If I can%26#39;t find an adapter here can I get one at the airport or at a store in the Nyhavn area where we will be staying. We are at the Admiral Hotel.

|||

The pan-european plugs (and 220 Voltage) are used in Denmark too. It%26#39;s pretty much the same all over continental Europe. The adapters are likely to be better priced in Canada.

Is it easy to make last minute arrangements....

Im visiting a friend in Prague in a couple of weeks. Ill be there for a coule of days before I fly home from Copenhagen (I plan on spending a couple days there too) My problem is, she says that she wants to come to Copenhagen with, and insists on making the plans on getting there/accomadation arrangements when we plan on leaving. Im nervous that waiting until last minuite we mess up the schedule and maybe end up costing alot. I feel like I should have a plane/train ticket ready, and a hotel booked. So my question is, will it most likely be fine and I won%26#39;t have a problem getting from Prague to Copenhagen on last minute.

I hope this made sense, just let me know if I have to clarify anything. I appreciate any advice. Thanks!

|||

Hi,

Norwegian are expanding their flights on Prague-Copenhagen, but it%26#39;s a low cost airline so tickets will most likely be more expensive closer to departure.

Trains will be via Berlin and Hamburg and most likely more expensive than a flight.

No need to book hotels in advance for September. It%26#39;s not peak season, so you can find reasonable hotels on arrival.

Copenhagen Airport to Train Station

What is the best way to get from the airport to the train station? Is there a train or shuttle of some sort? Or would we have to take a taxi? Thanks!

|||

Hi fromnywithlove,

There is train direct to the central station - runs every 20 min. from the airport station to Copenhagen Central Station.

Otherwise there is a metro line to Nørreport Station or Kongens Nytorv both downtown stations.

Take a look at http://www.cph.dk/CPH/UK/MAIN/ - where you can find more informations.

Welcome to Denmark - hope you enjoy it. Bring warm clothes and raingear.

|||

Thanks! Warm clothes and rain gear? Not in July I hope...

|||

You will never know about the weather in denmark - bring a raincoat at least.

|||

%26quot;What is the best way to get from the airport to the train station?%26quot;

There a is train station at the CPH airport, just walk out the building and voila!

Is there a certain place you are heading using the train?

|||

Odense. We are thinking about stopping there for 1 night on our way to Aero.

|||

There are direct connections from the Airport to Odense, but probably you%26#39;ll be in Odense faster by changing trains in Copenhagen C.

See www.dsb.dk for trains.

|||

Yes, you can save maximum 5 minutes by changing train.

Hans

|||

We are interested in getting from the airport to the central station. What is the fare in DKK? Since I was told that the taxi fare to our hotel would be in excess of 200 DKK, there must be a more inexpensive way to get there. We could always pick up a taxi at the Central Station to get to Helgolandsgade 3 (Clarion Mayfair). Thanks for your advice.

|||

Train tickets from the airport to Central Station cost DKK 31.50 per person.

From the Central Station to Helgolandsgade 3 is a 3-4 min walk (about 300 m).

Hans

|||

Thank you Hans for your information. Even though our hotel is only 300 meters from the Central Station, I do not know whether we would want to walk it with suitcases after flying for 10+ hours. Would it be difficult to get a taxi to go such a short distance?

Copenhage Christmas 2009

Heading to Copenhagen for week of Christmas, plan to travel xmas day Dec 25, not sure where to go. We are spending New Years in Amsterdam. Considering Hambug, but I would like smaller more quaint. Lubeck, Germany possibly. Or stay in Hamburg and go to Lubeck for a day trip/ We will have from Dec 25 to dec 29. Any suggestions?

|||

Please note that Dec 25 and 26 are major holidays in Denmark, meaning that everything will be closed - shops, museums and also a lot of restaurants and cafes. These days the Danes mostly spend having huge and heavy lunches with the family. On Dec 27, the shops and museums will open up again, but will be packed with people returning their unwanted Christmas presents.

This doesn%26#39;t mean that Christmas in Copenhagen will not be wonderful, but the week between Christmas (in Denmark, the big night is on Dec 24) and New Years is not very christmassy after all. The Tivoli Christmas market will be open again on Dec 26 (if they keep the opening hours from last year, that is), and there will be an ice skating rink on Kongens Nytorv - and some museums, cinemas and the zoo are open on Dec 26 (the zoo is open every day year-round). But people tend to be fed up with everything christmas after all the lunches and family gatherings taking place from Dec 24-26, and it has been seen that all the twinkling lights are taken down on dec 26.

You could also take a day trip to Malmø in Sweden - lovely city, and very easy to travel to from Copenhagen, only about 45 minutes by train.

|||

I must clarify, we will be in Copenhagen from Dec 20 thru Dec 25, departing by train 25 - not sure to where, Hamburg possibly or Lubeck. We have from Dec 25 to Dec 29 open, we travel to Amsterdam on Dec 29. Any suggestions for the time in Copenhagen or where to go on Dec 25 for a few days? Thank you

|||

Oh, wonderful, I didn%26#39;t get that!

In that case you can forget all about my former post, as it will not apply for you - you will be able to take part in all the christmas lights, decorations, shopping, markets and all...

I would consider Hamburg again - I have not been there, but people are raving about it, and I%26#39;d love to go.

I am not too familiar with Germany and can%26#39;t really advise you here. Have you tried posting this on the Germany Forum site?

|||

Oh, but regarding Copenhagen: What are your interests? I%26#39;d be happy to advise you! Where will you be staying?

|||

There is so much you can do here in December. But of course it depends on what your interests are. Tivoli in December is a MUST SEE! You will love it.

In The National Museum there is xmas brunch served every Sat and Sun, which definitely is worth trying. Remember to make reservation through their site.

|||

We are staying at the SAS Royal. Of course we will visit the xmas market, Tivoli during an evening, and the normal tourist attractions. My intersts are castles, palaces, and churches. I have posted in the Hamburg form to seek advice. I am more familiar with Germany than Denmark.

I was trying to figure out if there was somewhere to go in Denmark possibly the 25th to the 29th instead of Hamburg or Lubeck. Everything will be closed 25th and 26th, but would have 27th and 28th. Maybe Fredricksborg? (Spelling?) Thank you for all your comments so far, sorry I was not clear in my first post.

|||

Frederiksborg as in Frederiksborg Castle? I am not sure I understand.

|||

Frederiksborg Palace, I was saying that maybe we should go visit there after we leave Copenhagen on Dec 25th, travel on 25th up there, relax on the 26th and then visit Frederiksborg Palace dec 27th. Maybe I am mistaken. We don%26#39;t have to be to Amsterdam until Dec 29th. I am just looking for some place small town, quaint, would like a break from City. Rathen than leave Copenhagen and heading to Hamburg or Lubeck. Thought maybe we should go north from Copenhagen.

|||

Hillerød = Frederiksborg Palace (just to be clear)

Also, do people in Copenhagen go to chuch on Christmas eve? I am not too religious, not Catholic, would just like to go to church service on Christmas and does not even need to be in Engligh. More going for the cultural experience.

|||

I would definitely recommend you to visit Frederiksborg Castle (+Church). It is indeed a breathtaking place.

Hillerød itself is a nice place in Xmas time, so yes - spend a day up there. Make sure that Frederiksborg is open on that day.

How do I get from Hamburg Airport (HAM) to Esbjerg, Denmark

Hi can someone help me here. I need to get from Hamburg Airport Germany, to Esbjerg, Denmark. By train or Bus, cheapest way possible and back again. Will arrive Wednesday September 16,2009 10:00 am by Air and have to return by September 24, 2009 10:00 am

If you could help that would be great

Thankyou in advance.

|||

Go to this website:

www.db.de - you can change the language to english at the top red strip to the right.

Input Hamburg Airport and Esbjerg.

The trips is about 5 hours and 15 minutes - and costs 49 Euros each way.

|||

Hi,

You can find timetables and fares here: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

I usually change trains at Hamburg Dammtor as it is shorter and faster than changing at Hamburg Main Station (Hbf).

baggage storage

We will be arriving at the freeport pier on Sunday 13th of Sept. at 8:30am, we can not check in until 1:PM.What can we do with our luggage and how do we

get to town hall for a tour. Iread that there is no

You can find lockers in the central train station and also at the grey-metal building (below-ground) with public toilets in the City Hall Square. Most hotels offer storage facilities although you check-in later during the day. Ask your hotel once again.

Copenhagen--never been to that part of the world

Need advice, my husband and I really want to visit Copenhagen and the area, we are NOT interested in fjords, so cruises are not an option, we love to be on our own, venture by foot day by day, but also enjoy day tours by great tour guides. Wouldn%26#39;t mind seeing Norway, Sweden by rail, but really want to concentratein staying in one or 2 cities for 5 days or so. Need advice on all aspects of trip, even what month to travel and hotels and what to see.

|||

First of all, there are no fjords in or near Copenhagen, let alone Denmark. Denmark is one of the flattest countries in the world.

I for one can%26#39;t give any advice unless you give us a hint about your interests. Music, culture, landscape, nightlife, citybreak....? Kinda tough to advice a stranger on what to do for 5 days in Copenhagen without having any idea what that person is into.

Good Restaurants Nr The Square Hotel

Hi, we are visiting Copenhagen shortly and staying at The Square hotel (Radhuspladsen 14, Copenhagen DK-1550) which I believe is not far from City Hall Square. Can anyone recommend a good place for breakfast and venues for dinner nearby?

|||

With that location, almost everything is nearby. Not far from your hotel (10 min walk) is Halmtorvet (Halm Square) with many nice cafees (good breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner). Try Carlton for instance or some of the cafees on the other side of the street.

As for dinner, what kind of food do you like and what kind of places? How old are you? You%26#39;ve got many amazing places to chose between staying at Square Hotel.

|||

Hi Heroneya, thanks for the information (and on the weather front to, I will pack layers!)

My friend and I are both in our early 30%26#39;s on a girlie weekend. We just want to see a few sights, thinking Tivoli, Nyhavn %26amp; a canal boat trip, some shopping (is stroget the best place for more high street brands or than designer?). Is there any must see sights you would recommend.

Thanks for the tip on breakfast, we%26#39;ll try one of the cafes for a leisurely breakfast and watch the work go by. Re food type for dinner I%26#39;m not really a big fish or meat eater chicken is about my limit so I usually play it safe and opt of vegetarian.

Thanks again!

Ange

|||

I would love to help you out with that. Feel free to contact me (heroneya@gmail.com). I have loads of suggestions :)

|||

The cafe attached to the hotel was pretty good for breakfast. Decent prices, food was good, convenient. If it%26#39;s hot try one of their fancy iced coffee drinks.

|||

Consider Riz Raz for a vegetarian buffet meal. It was surprisingly good and cheap (for CPH).

How long...

If we arrive in Copenhagen by air at 1:30 p.m. and our ship leaves at 7:00 p.m. - how long will it take to transfer from the airport to the ship and be able to leave the ship for a quick tour? I%26#39;m really interested in a timeline from airport through customs and register onto ship.

|||

How long time it will take to transfer depends on where your ship is docking and your mode of transport.

You will normally have passed immigration, collected your luggage and passed through customs in less than 445 min after landing at Copenhagen Airport.

Hans

|||

I hope you meant 45 minutes. LOL! Thank you for the information.

Check with your travel agent - but I am positive that you can leave your luggage at the pier (at least if you are sailing with Royal Caribbian). You are correct that there is no line 26 operating on Sundays - but there is an audio guide doubledecker bus leaving from the pier (costs DKK 120 and takes approx 100 min. - it will allow you to take your luggage with you). Alternatively you can walk to the train station (follow the blue line in the pavement from the pier). Trains leaving every 10 minutes and the trip to the Central Station take approx 10 minutes and costs DKK 21 for a ticket valid to busses and trains for 60 minutes. You will have to buy the ticket from a machine so have either DKK cash or use your creditcard.

Sleeping bag liner or full sheets?

Hi I%26#39;m spending one night in Copenhagen soon and plan on staying in a hostel. Do I need to take a full set of sheets with me (top and bottom sheet plus pillowcase) or is a silk sleeping bag liner (plus separate pillowcase) enough?

Want to avoid linen charge as only one night and don%26#39;t want to carry around a set of sheets if I can avoid it!

Also is there any real difference between DanHostel City or downtown - locations and reviews I%26#39;ve found are fairly similar (i.e. ok not great!. Any better recommendations welcome)

Thanks

Cool bars, not too young a crowd

Hello,

I was thinking of going to Copenhagen next Thurs-Sunday. What are some cool lounge type bars with a good crowd (not too stuffy the people and not too young). I am 37 (male) and love house music, electro house, and hip hop. Probably looking for a crowd of 25-40 yrs. olds.

Also, just cool bars in general that meet this criteria, don´t have to be lounge bars.

Thanks!

|||

K-bar - Ved Stranden 20, inner city

Bodega - Kapelvej, Nørrebro (good food as well)

The office - Sortedam Dossering 83, Østerbro

Oak Room - Birkegade 10, Nørrebro

Karriere Bar - Flæsketorvet 57, Vesterbro

Jusy a few lounge-type, cocktail-bar-type suggestions with a not too young crowd. Also, do a tour up and down Istedgade. Lots of bars there. If in the mood for a larger night club type place, check out Vega at the end of Istedgade. Avoid Town Hall Square and Strøget bars like the plague. It is not for your type.

Wish I could trade with you. Sevilla is one of my favourite places in the whole world.

Saludos

|||

Thanks so much. If you ever need any up to date advice about Seville, just let me know.

|||

Yes Seville is a very nice city, but the nightlife (Clubs, bars etc.) is soooooooo much better in Copenhagen.

|||

What? Not to turn this into the Sevilla forum, but how does standing in a crowd and ordering mojitos at 80 kroner per glass while it%26#39;s -5 degrees outside compare to sitting at a streetbar eating tapas and drinking all night in the heat, then paying 300 kroner for meal and drinks?

Sorry. Copenhagen night life is for sure different. Better? Not in my book. If I was from Seville, I would not come to Copenhagen expecting to be blown away by the amazing nightlife.

|||

As I wrote it%26#39;s the clubs, bars etc. that are much better in Copenhagen.

If you idea of a good nightlife is %26#39;sitting in a streetbar eating tapas and drinking all night in the heat%26#39; then yes you are correct Seville is much better.

But if you prefer just a tiny bit of music %26amp; partying, then Copenhagen is much much better. Actually Seville has the most boring nightlife (again when it comes to partying) I have experienced in Europe (and I have visited my part of European cities).

I was there with a buddy for a weekend, we walked and walked all over the city (all the so called nightlife areas as well), but found nothing than people sitting and eating. No clubs, bars with music and people having fun just people sitting in restaurants and on the streets drinking a beer minding their own businesses.

My friend is from Barcelona and he agreed with this as well.

|||

Well, maybe I%26#39;m getting old, but the Copenhagen club scene just does not strike me as very interesting. Same old five clubs, same old people there trying to look cooler than the next guy. Then some new bar or club opens and the same crowd moves there for a month. Then on to the next one.

But sure, you are right, for the club scene (not sure about the bar scene) Copenhagen has more going. Likely because the weather makes it more obvious to concentrate night life inside dark, warm locations.

But outside the clubs, gloomy wet streets with drunk teens puking in pizza-trays... Does anybody find walking around Copenhagen at 5 AM on a Saturday night charming? As opposed to tranquillo sevillanos strolling around from bar to bar, having a glass of wine at one place, a sherry at the next, then a beer and a tapa.

It%26#39;s probably a matter of definition. I just thought of your comment and the subject as in which city I would prefer to be out and about at night, and in that aspect, Sevilla won hands down.

But again, maybe I%26#39;m just getting too old and too comfortable and too lazy to work my way from club to club on opposite sides of Copenhagen on a wet or cold Copenhagen night. Or maybe I%26#39;m just in bad spirits right now as it rains and we%26#39;re looking at about 6-7 months of bleek fall and winter.

Brrr... Good thing I won%26#39;t be around for the next couple of months.

But to avoid hijacking the OP%26#39;s thread: Yes, Copenhagen definately has an interesting selection of lounge-type bars. And a lively nightlife on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. But getting a good buzz going is not cheap.

Nana

|||

Hi Nana,

Central Station has baggage storage facilities - both lockers and a serviced area or maybe your hotel will let you leave your luggage at the hotel until you can check in.

You are correct, bus 26 does not go to the Freeport on Sundays.

The Nearest S-train station is Nordhavn Station. It takes 15 minutes walk (See the sign in the port). Take the S-train A, B, C or E-line to Central Station.

The Town Hall is a 10 minutes walk from Central Station.

Enjoy your stay in Copenhagen.

Hans

|||

Most hotels will store your bags until check in time.

Email them to see if yours does.

|||

Thanks so much Hans, the problem is we are picked up at the airport and carried to the boat. They said that we have to stay with our luggage until check in time @ 1PM. How much would be a taxi from the freeport port to town square. How far is town square from the s station?

Thanks

Nana

|||

Sorry, I seem to have misunderstood your question.

I thought that your cruise ship was arriving at 8:30am and you were going to check in at a Copenhagen hotel at 1pm.

Is the pick up from the airport and dropping at the free port included in your cruise?

If not, I would take the train from the airport to central station (cost DKK 31.50/person) and drop your luggage there, walk 10 min to the Town Hall and go on your trip from there. After your trip you can go back to central station and pick up your luggage. Then either take S-train to Nordhavn station (cost DKK 21/person) and walk 15 min to the free port or take a taxi from central station to the free port (cost around DKK 200).

A taxi from the airport to the free port will cost around DKK 400.

Hans

|||

A taxi from the freeport port to Townhall Square will cost around DKK 175. Townhall Square is about 10 min walk from either Vesterport station or Central station.

Hans

|||

You have been very helpful,thanks so much. We have already paid for the transfer to the ship thru Princess. Is the info you have giving me better than taking a taxi to the other port and then taking a bus to town hall? There is no bus on Sundays at freeport pier.

Nana

|||

Hans,

Can you store your luggage at the train station without buying a ticket?

thanks

Nana

|||

I was able to solve my problem. I emailed the tour co. and they said to take a taxi to town hall and they have a place for luggage if you take the grand tour, which we plan to do.

Thanks for your info about the cost for a taxi from

freeport pier to town hall. I think that you said the taxi will take a credit card.

Thanks so much.

Flyvergrillen - planespotting place

Hi All,

Does anybody know how to get to the Flyvergrillen Bar using a public transport from the city center e.g. main railway station?

Thx

|||

According to Rejseplanen.dk, take any train from Central Station headed to the airport, and get off at Tårnby station; this is 1 stop before the airport. At Tårnby, switch to bus 30 in the direction Søvang, Rønnevej and get off at Tømmerup stationsveg which should be just 200 meters from the Flyvergrillen Bar.

|||

From the main railway station I suggest you ride bus number 30.

It leaves from the street running between the station and Tivoli.

Ask to be dropped of near to the Flyvergrill and walk the last 400 meters straight ahead.

Oh and it%26#39;s not a bar, but I think you know that ;)

In Danish grillbar is a term for a place where you can buy burgers and hot dogs.

It%26#39;s at Amager Landevej 290.

You can look up connections at www.rejseplanen.dk - change language at the bottom of the page.

Thank You Don Thomas + my restaurant review + suggestion!

Hello all

Having recently arrived back from Copenhagen, I thought I would write a little something with regards to our restaurant experiences.

Firstly, we had a great time in CPH, stayed at The Bethel - review to come......very central on the Nyhavn.

Eating out was a delight and we tried many of the speciality dishes and enjoyed lots of fish and caviar and the Smørrebrød - yummy.

I was going to add to the %26#39;how expensive is Copenhagen%26#39; thread, but instead will add here - it can be expensive as you make it! Mealtimes can be pricey, especially for our friends from the US and the UK....but you can eat at reasonably priced places away from the Nyhavn (albeit charming, they do add on the Kr!)

That brings me to thank Don Thomas for his wonderful recommendations, (a list I printed and took with along). Last Tuesday, we decided that it was off to the Madklubben for dinner and we took our map and meandered down the Store Kongesgade to no.66. On our merry way, I pulled out my critique and glaring there DonT had stated %26#39;reservations a must%26#39;. Please be advised and to avoid disappointment this certainly IS the case!!! It was too late in the journey to heed see those words of wisdom!

Upon arrival at the Madklubben the charming Simon informed that we could have a long wait if we decided to stay. Oh dear, it was past 8pm and we were a tad hungry. He did say that their other restaurant, the %26#39;other one%26#39; %26#39;Den Anden%26#39; would have space and mapped out the route.

I must say that Madklubben looked wonderful with nice subdued lighting and dark wood and a fanstastic horse lamp, (you have to see it) a nice vibe and was packed to the rafters!

So, off to Den Anden we strolled, or actually skipped as we were starving. After backtracking a few times, we nearly gave up but eventually did find the place and it was well worth the effort.

Once again, the restaurant was nearly full, but we got a table. Our server James was absolutely wonderful (hope he reads this, I did tell him I would post!). The food was great and the best meal of our holiday. The style is traditional Danish with a flourish of French cuisine. The Charcuterie starter was divine, followed by pork fillet and absolute best french fries (chips) I have ever taster - EVER! All followed by Creme Brulee and a very nice %26#39;wheat beer%26#39;. The bill was not a shock (as some had been) and the prices very reasonable - they offer a fixed price meal option and you can gorge on 3, 4 or even 5 courses!

So thanks again to DonT - this made our day and again, the best meal of our trip!

Just to advise for those visiting that James gave us a card for their new upcoming restaurant to be opened by the same owners. I would be pleased to add this information and in fact, here are the details for all 3 restaurants.

and the new one:

For a teenager , how "safe" are Danish Cities ?

I am wondering , in general, how %26quot;safe%26quot; are Denmark%26#39;s cities for a teenager. To travel alone on train/bus during the day ?

|||

Very safe.

|||

Totally agree.

Hans

|||

This is good to hear ! Here in Melbourne Australia, it has become quite unsafe. For a parent can be nerve wrecking time, when your child goes to the city for a day trip. There are allot of violent idiots out and about.....that are out of it %26amp; been watching to much American C..p!!!!

|||

In general Copenhagen is one of Europe%26#39;s safest capital city%26#39;s. Travel is safe too, however there are one or two areas I would avoid being in as a lone teenage girl - Norrebro and Istegade at the back of the station. Other than that it really is a lovely safe place to be.

Is this true ?

I am surprised by this, if it is true.

I want to set her a %26#39;budget%26quot; before she goes.....for a teenage girl in this country....what would be reasonable weekly %26quot;pocket money%26quot; for her in DK ?

I appreciate any feed back.

Cheers

Babette..............Melbourne.....Australia

|||

I can%26#39;t help you with a teenage budget - but it%26#39;s not true that it never snows.

We have some kind of snow every year but it never stays on the ground for weeks on end.

What is true is that Denmark is the Scandinavian country with the least snow and no areas have it permanently through the winter the way you see it in Sweden, Norway and Finland.

|||

Thank you Andrea for your info !

i am wondering this bcos of the type of %26quot;footwear%26quot; for her to be taking !

And do i buy it here , in Australia, or here in Denmark???

Some Danish boy here in Australia, on exchange, was telling her %26quot;It never snows in Denmark%26quot;....I thought this can not be true!

Im so glad to read your reply.

Cheers

Hi Babette

Congratulations to your daughter! what an exciting time for her ahead!

I was an exchange student in Denmark 11 years ago, from Vic as well :) I loved it and still love it, Denmark is my home away from home!

I recommend you buy her basic things in australia before you go, clothes do tend to be more expensive here. Things like good walking shoes or boots are very useful, a good rain coat with a hood (might be a good time to get it now given Melbourne is going out of the winter season) but Danes tend to be very fashion-trendy and wear heels on bicycles (which they use a lot to get everywhere!!)

If your daughter or you would like to get in touch about what it%26#39;s like to be an Aussie in Denmark, I would be happy to help. I am actually in Denmark at the moment, visiting one of my wonderful host families, but will have more time to write in a few weeks when I return!

In the meantime, all the best with your travel planning.

For starters.

Can I suggest she look at http://www.copenhagencast.com for some podcasts to get started listening to Danish... it%26#39;s a very handy (currently free) language learning service. From my experience, though it can be very hard, it is worth the effort learning Danish (and to get the grip of it it can take 4-6 months) - once you get basic conversational skills, the experience and friendships she will form will be life-changing.

Re budget, probably allow for about 1.5 to 2 times what she requires now. Her family/s should be supportive in terms of food and board, but if she wants to go on holidays, visit friends, see tourist attractions, etc, it will cost some. She will possibly want to get some more clothes too when she is here. (this may be because she puts on weight due to all the amazing, but rich, food!) Some host programs (like Rotary) will offer some small amounts of pocket money which generally covers transport costs.

and from my experience, it does snow, not heavily, but enough to excite someone who has never lived in the snow before, and frustrate everyone who has to ride bikes to school in the snow some days!

|||

Thanks Lucy....I have P%26#39;Med u as well !!!

Will be in contact again...to picks yopur brains......thanx SSSSOOOOO much !!!!!

Cheers......enjoy !!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi babette,

Copenhagen is my favourite city in Europe and I am pretty sure your daughter will love it.

the only drawback is that it is very expensive, almost twice the price as it is in the UK.

I am a lecturer at a University in England and I oversee student exchanges between our respective universities. I visit once a year to teach and have friends out there, so I know it pretty well. So if you want some info on the less touristy side of Copenhagen then give me a shout.

Yes it does snow in DK and in winter the winds are freezing!

Bethel hotel ? Help

Hi I like the sound of this Hotel, photos look lovely but I can%26#39;t find any websites for it, please help we leave on Fri and no Hotel yet

|||

www.hotel-bethel.dk.

other people have recommended

www.71nyhavnhotel.com/

|||

Hi there

http://www.hotel-bethel.dk/

here is the link - we stayed there last week for 3 nights and my review is about to go live on TA (once they have done their checks)

I can tell you that double rooms start from 845kr and the exate in £ today is £99.00

That does sound a lot, but believe me, I did a ton of research beforehand and costed up around 12 hotels pre-visit and that rate is very good.

Rooms are basic and clean. Breakfast is included in the rate - a major plus point is the excellent location on the Nyhavn, but what impressed me the most was the wonderful and helpful staff....nothing was too much trouble.

Good luck and don%26#39;t delay in booking - here is the enquiry email: info@hotel-bethel.dk

It is popular.

Have a great trip

Tivoli question

Now I did do a search I just wanted to clarify. On the website it said %26quot;open everyday until 20 September%26quot;

Does this mean its completely shut down after that or just during the week. I will be in Copenhagen around 25 September, and was just wondering if it will be completely shut down until the week it is open in October.

Thank you!

|||

Unfortunately for you it will be completely shutdown until October and then again after that until end of November.

|||

aww. Well to look on the bright side there is plenty more things to do. Thanks for your answer!

|||

I too will be in Copenhagen at the same time, and planned on visiting Tivoli Sept 26th. Glad I know about this ahead of time. Thanks for the information.

To buy boots in OZ or Denmark, for January???

Im wondering to buy footwear fro Denmark in January .....what does anyone suggest ?

And , do we buy here in Australia....or in Denmark.

Buy leather ???For 16yr old daughter !

Need some help with this query !

Thanx.......Babette

|||

Hi there

Having just returned from Copenhagen, I would suggest that whilst the shoes and boots I saw (and I did shop lots) were very lovely, the prices compared to the UK were quite expensive.

I an not sure how much you would consider paying as it%26#39;s like %26#39;how long is a piece of string%26#39;......but if this was my dilemma, I would be buying at home.

The other reason to do this is to give those boots a good old wearing in. It would be awful if you daughter was to step out in her new boots, looking lovely and then find that with all the walking the boots rubbed....just a thought.

Have a great trip.

|||

Thanx for your reply.....good point ....to %26quot;wear them in%26quot; !!!Buy b4 she goes !

|||

Do note that the boots should have some insulation and soles with good grip. It maybe snow and ice in CPH in Jan.

Denmark Rail Pass

we will be arriving at Copenhagen airport travel to Aarhus from the airport, probably take a few day trips and then back to Copenhagen for two days.

The One Country Railpass seems a reasonable price for Denmark ($119 saver rate for 7 days, adult)

Is the pass good for the trip from CPH to Aarhus central station? Does it seem reasonable to get the one week rail pass to get from teh Copenhagen airport to Aarhus, explore Denmark for a few days and then tarvel back to Copenhagen?

Tak!

End of March in Denmark/Sweden/Norway

Hello all,

We are planning to go to the scandinavian countries (Denmark/Sweden/Norway)in end of March next year. Is the end of March a good time to go to the scandinavian countries or will it be very cold at this time of the year?

Is this the rainy season for these countries?

Please let me know

thx in advance

|||

March is the 1.st spring-month in Scandinavia. Weather is hard to predict in this period. Be prepared for everything, follow the weather forecasts.

Winter is dec-jan-feb, spring is march-april-may, but if You%26#39;re a bit unlucky, winter can stretch into march and even april - especially in Norway and Sweden. On the other hand, Summer can start a little early, and You may run into sun and blue heaven and no wind.

My estimate is that the temps. will be between 13-19 degrees celsius.

|||

How abour rain? is this a rainy month usually?

|||

Statistically March is the month with least precipitation in Denmark, though you may experience precipitation 1 day out of 3. Mostly a drizzle or a light snow shower.

Average temperatures are around 5C, but you may experience anything from -15C to 18C.

Planning Opera Trip in Jan Need Help!

Hi all and thanks in advance,need some advice as I was planning to go to Copenhagen 13 and 14 Jan for opera.Need advice on a hotel nearby or info on how handy or not opera house is to get to,plus how to get to and from airport.

Thanks,

Liam

|||

Any info on appreciated,particularly on hotels near opera house.

|||

Hi Liam,

Maybe a hotel in the Nyhavn area will suite you, e.g.

http://www.hotel-bethel.dk/ or www.71nyhavnhotel.com/

You can then take the harbour bus from Nyhavn to the opera.

Hans

|||

Thanks a lot,just another thought is it crazy to go in January,what is the weather like then,is there any danger of airport closures etc?

|||

You will experience more rain or sleet than snow in January. In the last decade the few (2 IIRC) snowstorms that have more or less closed down Denmark have always been in the first half of February. Closure of Copenhagen Airport for more than a few hours due to weather is unlikely.

Hans

|||

Thanks Hans.

|||

We stayed at the Marriott. It was very roomy if you like space. There is a water shuttle from Marriott to opera.

Where to stay in Copenhagen?

My husband and I are going for the first time next spring and are trying to look ahead and find out the best areas to stay in and good budget options. We also are wondering about staying a night in Roskilde? Would that be interesting?

|||

Hi Denise

just got back last week. And I just posted a review for the Avenue hotel. It is not a centrally located hotel but I was looking for a hotel that included breakfast. Property was a decent choice. We went out to Roskilde for one day to see the Viking museum and the cathedral. We bought the Copenhagen card for 3 days that cover lots of things but not the Viking museum.

I don%26#39;t know what else you plan to do, but I think a day trip is enough.

|||

Roskilde is very close, it would be silly to pack the suitcase and stay the night over. You can also catch the late bus/train if you want to go out in Roskilde.

Try Cabinn hotels, they are very cheap, locations are good, but the rooms are not so spacious.

|||

Also check out the %26quot;Scandic%26quot; hotels. Very good standard, and high value for the money.

A head cold in Copenhagen!

Can help me with what medicine to buy for a bad cold that I caught in Sweden? I don%26#39;t recognize any of the American names-----Tylenol cold %26amp; sinus, sudafed, mucinex, any help would be appreciated---I can%26#39;t leave Copenhagen until I can taste again!!

|||

Bad news - you can%26#39;t buy stuff like that in Denmark.

|||

Thanks for the info. I was afraid of that. Now I need to find a cheap hotel to wait this out!

|||

Go to a pharmacy (%26quot;apotek%26quot;) and ask if they have anything for what you need. There might be alternatives.

September a good time to travel?

Hi again,

I%26#39;m just wondering if September is a good time to visit Denmark. I%26#39;m travelling this weekend but not sure if the weather would be too cold - that cycling and kayaking tours would be unpleasant if not impossible?

Understand that Copenhagen does get windy at times - is the weather similar to that of Amsterdam in spring? And also can I ask about what time the sun sets in the evenings?

|||

Hi,

The forecast for the beginning of next week is cloudy with some sunny spells and mainly dry. From Wednesday there will be more showers. Day temperatures mainly from 13 to 18C. The sun will be setting around 7:15pm.

Hans

|||

Thanks Hans! Apprec it!

Day trips from Grenaa

My children(will be 6,5)and I will be going to Grenaa next summer. We will be staying at my grandmother%26#39;s summer house. Unfortunatly, she is not of the best of health... so I am looking for some day trips that I can make with the kids when she is resting. We have been to Grenaa numerous times so have done most things there, as well as Ebeltoft. I will even consider staying one night somewhere. After a week my husband will be coming and we will drive down to Billund (Legoland, then over to Odense and then finally to Relatives in Copenhagen.

Does anyone have any suggestions for day trips with the kids?

Thanks,

Kristine

Another Currency Question

Hi,

I%26#39;m visiting Copenhagen this week and would like to know if the best option to get my money changed from USD to DKK would be at the airport or at a foreign exchange bureau? Do they charge commission fees and such?

I know it%26#39;s always easier to withdraw cash from the ATM but I don%26#39;t have a proper credit/debit card issued from the banks here Qatar that actually works overseas. So I always have to end up bringing everything in cash.

Appreciate if someone can please enighten me ...

|||

The best would be if you could wait until you get to the main station and find FOREX. It is the cheapest and easiest way. They don%26#39;t charge you when buying foreign/domestic valuta and if you keep your receipt, you can for free exchange the rest of the kr that you haven%26#39;t used back to dollars.

|||

I agree, use an exchange bureau like Forex or Change Group, who both got several offices in CPH. Generally You get more out of using one of these, instead of a normal bank.

By the way - don%26#39;t confuse %26quot;Forex%26quot; with %26quot;Forexchange%26quot;. Forexchange got offices in the airport, and got sky high prices. Besides taking about 40DKR they also charge about 15% of the full amount! That can add up pretty fast.

|||

Thank you both very much for your kind reply! It is very useful indeed ;-)

|||

Well if you don%26#39;t have danish cash or a credit card that will work then you won%26#39;t be able to buy a ticket to go to Copenhagen central for the Exchange like the other%26#39;s are recomending???. I can%26#39;t see how you would avoid changing at the airport - however i totally agree - do NOT use Forexchange. There are a couple of banks inside the departure terminal before you head downstairs for the bags. You could use them....

A day to visit Malmo & Odense

Hi all, I would like to plan a day%26#39;s trip to Malmo %26amp; Odense. Is that possible?

And what is the best %26amp; cheapest mode of transport? Rail I guess right? Should I invest in getting a rail pass as well?

Please advise %26amp; thanks for the help.

|||

You%26#39;ll need a day each for Malmo and Odense - they are in opposit directions.

Train or bus will be the cheapest but I don%26#39;t think a railpass will be worth it. A one country pass to Denmark does not cover the trip to Malmo.

You can look up travel times at:

www.rejseplanen.dk

And there%26#39;s a bus for Malmo:

It%26#39;s 120 dkr for a day retur and runs to this schedule:

http://www.graahundbus.dk/index999.htm

I personably prefer the train it%26#39;s a little more expensive but runs every 20 minutes.

|||

To Malmo by bus Swebus Express - www.swebusexpress.se/SwebusExpress_com/ - is cheaper and have more departures.

Hans

|||

If you have only 1 day, choose Odense.

|||

Really? I thought the only main attraction there was Hans Christian Anderson%26#39;s birthplace.

I mean I do like scenery and all, but reason I wanted to visit Malmo was so I could say I%26#39;ve visited Sweden :P I would have liked to visit Stockholm and the rest of Sweden, but time is a factor on this trip. :(

Seems like folks are saying it is not possible to squeeze both cities in a day. I thought Malmo was pretty nearby via train from Copenhagen. And Odense was about 1.5hrs away from Copenhagen as well.

|||

You are correct. The main attraction in Odense is Hans Christian Andersen%26#39;s birthplace. You will not find many other things that you can%26#39;t find in Copenhagen. Train trip is 1:16 to 1:31 each way.

Train to Malmo takes 0:35 each way.

If you go to Malmo you should not miss a visit to Santiago Calatrava%26#39;s Turning Torso.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turning_Torso

Hans

|||

Sorry of course it%26#39;s possible to visit both places in one day if all you want is to be able to say you%26#39;ve been there.

But especially Malmo has interesting places that takes a while to get to - Turning Torso for one - and to wrap your mind around.

But certainly it%26#39;s possible.

|||

thanks! Yeah I wanted to visit that Turning Torso when I was researching on Malmo.

One thing, is it advisable to book train tickets online or should I purchase them on the train - considering I%26#39;ll be there during a weekday - I am not sure if I%26#39;ll encounter rush hour inter-city traffic. And I don%26#39;t think there are much discounts for us.

|||

You can%26#39;t buy them on the train - just buy them at the station right before you leave. You can buy them all at the same time at Copenhagen Central just explain to them what you want to do.

|||

Thanks Andreadoria56! Much appreciate the help.
