Island of Samso

I will be staying in Copenhagen for six weeks and would love to go an visit the Island of Samso. What is the best way to get there? Who do I contact about a tour? Is there a place to spend the night? Can it be a one day trip or should it be a weekend trip?

You can reach Samsø by train and ferry... your best bet is to drop into DSB (Danish State Railways) at Copenhagen Central Station and inquire.

Because of the ferry schedule, you are pretty much committed to at least one overnight.

Once you get to Samsø, you will be at the mercy of the local bus service... you will need to plan your travel very carefully, as the bus doesn%26#39;t come by often. In fact, I would consider renting a car or a bike if you want any degree of mobility there.

For accommodation, look at visitdenmark.com and search for %26quot;Samsø%26quot;.

All that said, Samsø is one of the most boring of Denmark%26#39;s many pretty islands. It%26#39;s popular with Danes who own summer houses there -- and for that it%26#39;s lovely -- but it offers next to nothing to the casual tourist. The island is extensively farmed and logged, so even the %26quot;natural beauty%26quot; is nothing remarkable.

So unless you are committed to Samsø, consider Bornholm, Ærø, Møn (disclaimer -- I am an innkeeper on Møn), Als, the south part of Fyn.
