Things to buy

What sorts of things (Unique Danish items/foods/sweets) should I buy in Copenhagen. I am looking for things you can%26#39;t really get here in the UK.

I%26#39;m not really sure what You can and can%26#39;t get in UK, but I got an idea about it. There must be lots of things You could get here.

Lets start with %26quot;rugbrød%26quot; some kind of rough bread pretty uniqe to DK.

Chokolates from Anton Berg, Toms or Odense marcipan.

In Christiania You%26#39;ll be able to find many special things - some of them smokeable - and illegal. But also art and handcrafted works.

Offcourse there are many kinds of special danish designs in both clothes and useable artwork. Clothes could be %26quot;Munthe+Simonsen%26quot; or the Isabel Christiansen line %26quot;Dream%26quot;(underwear) and %26quot;O%26quot;(I think)

But my main suggestion would be to %26quot;invest%26quot; in some Royal Danish Porcelain, %26quot;Kongeligt Porcelæn%26quot;. You%26#39;ll find their shop in Strøget, around Jorchs passage.

They sell all kinds of porcelain, and it keeps it%26#39;s value over time - even increases if picking the right pieces. You can find pieces from a few hundred DKR to like a hundred thousand DKR.

I almost forgot to mention amber. Denmark are known all over the world for it%26#39;s fine amber jewellery,so if You%26#39;re into that kind of thing, You should have a look at that while here. There are severel jewellers along Strøget, which offers different designs, bt have a look at theHose of amber, situated at Kings new square(Kongens Nytorv):

Salt liquorice - a danish speciality, go for the brands blue jeans and piratos. That%26#39;s something that people I know from UK, find very strange, different and exotic. None of them really like it, but you should try : )

Salty licorice is definitely an acquired taste. I have yet to find someone here in the USA who will want a second piece after they%26#39;ve tried the first one...

Anton Berg chocolate on the other hand is always a winner. Especially the ones with madeira and other similar fillings. Great for gifts. I know you can buy Anton Berg at Heathrow Airport, but I don%26#39;t know if it%26#39;s available elsewhere in the UK. In any case, you%26#39;d have more of a choice in Copenhagen.

Yeah - it%26#39;s pretty weird that We danes like it so much, when nobody else in the world apperently does...

I ate it from the age of 3 or something - and LOVED IT(I%26#39;m sure) - and still do, to this day.

Go for a high %26quot;salmiak%26quot; - percentage, the more salmiak the better. There is also %26quot;bolcher%26quot;(lollipops without sticks) with salmiak.

Try the %26quot;Dracula%26quot; ones - guaranteed to bring tears to Your eyes - if You%26#39;re not a hardcore liqourice fan, like me.

However - I HATE the sweet liqourice. It%26#39;s a real anticlimax getting one of those in the mouth.

Note: Now You can also get various kinds of icecream with strong salmiak liqourice, but that%26#39;s a bit off for my taste, I must admit.

When I go to Denmark I always bring back;

1. Lots of Danish Remoulade - this is a condiment which you will be served with hot dogs or french fries so you can try it and see if you like it before buying it in the supermarket

2. Toms chocolate - in particular the Yankie bars (bit like Mars), Holly bars (bit like Topic), and Kaempe Skildpadder (some turtle shaped chocs with rum creme caramel)

3. Stimorol chewing gum

4. Christmas decorations - on sale all through the year in houseware shops

Also you HAVE to try the wonderful ice creams that are available in Denmark - huge waffle cones with 3 scoops ice cream (try nougat flavour) strawberry marshmallow cream, fresh cream and jam.

Just wanna add, that You can also find Royal Porcelain in various antique shops.

Here You%26#39;ll also be able to find the more rare and older pieces. The prices will be a bit cheaper these places, and You can probably haggle the price a bit further down too. You%26#39;ll noy be able to find it a lot cheaper these places though, as Royal Porcelain tends to keep the prices, even increases in many cases.

Go to the official shop first, and find what You like(take a photo) and then try the antique shops to see if You can save some money.

Beware of buying %26quot;platter%26quot;(plates with motives) from the 70%26#39;ies and start to mid 80%26#39;ies. The production of these particular items has decreased a lot, due to overproduction in those years.

However, if You want some %26quot;cheap%26quot; Royal Porcelain, You can go for those plates. You can find them in antique shops from approx 30 - 50 Dkr a%26#39; piece(Original price 4-500 Dkr)

But personally I would go for the big figures/figurines from 3000 DKR and up.

Thanks for all your fabulous replies. I came back from this fabulous city with some great things thanks to all your advice most notably:

- loads of unique items from the store Ilums Boligus. I could spend a whole day in there. I just bought a new flat and my style is very unique so I was in style heaven.

- the clothes from Munthe plus Simonsen were indeed unique in its own right. Really fabulous pieces (not cheap) but I was lucky because the sales were on

- The Royal Copenhagen porceline shop has some nice things but probably better suited for someone like my Mum. They did do a range of cups and bowls that had a silicon band around them instead of handles which were great though. They had a better deal on them at the airport (3 for 2) on the mugs.

- the Toms Skilpadder chocolates are a must try. I bought 4 packets from the basement of a department store called Illums along with some Yorkie bars.

- Anthon Berg chocolates-the airport had some tavellers exclusive flavours which inlcuded a chocolate/hazel nut filling. These were gorgeous and I wish I had bought another packet but considering that I have dining on the Toms Skilpadders since I have gotten back it was just as well that I didn%26#39;t.

- I couldn%26#39;t really bring these back but the cakes at La Glace cafe in the heart of town was a nice experience. Everyone was ordering the sportscake but it looked like it had loads of whip cream so I went for the safe option and had one with choclate mousse and an apricot jam in the middle.
